While most cancers have a genetic or environmental predisposition, lifestyle changes can help prevent cancer. A little modification of your lifestyle may prove to be the thin line separating health from disease, cancer included. What can you do to limit your chances of developing cancer? What can you do to keep cancer at bay?

  1. Maintain a healthy weight – Studies reveal that excessive weight gain may be the red flag and should be avoided by anyone who wants to keep cancer at bay.
  2. Avoid excessive alcohol consumption – You may enjoy drinking like a fish in the ocean but research has shown time and again that excessive alcohol increases chances of developing cancer by as much as 20%.
  3. Don’t smoke – I wish I could sympathize with smokers the world over but I don’t. Cigarette smoking is more dangerous than words can reveal and should be avoided.
  4. Eat a low fat high nutrient diet – Going for oils as opposed to fats and eating a low fat diet is necessary in staying healthy and keeping cancer at bay.
  5. Go organic – Hope you understand what I mean. Most agrochemicals used in modern farming are associated with free radicals that may stimulate malignancy in various body tissues leading to cancer development.
  6. Avoid excessive use of antibiotics – Are you one of those who rush for antibiotics every time you have an infection? Well, think again. Long term use of antibiotics predisposes individuals to cancer.
  7. Exercise – It doesn’t mean that you hit the gym running but do it if you must. 20 to 30 minutes of exercise every day will reduce chances of suffering from a variety of cancers.
  8. Eat more white meat – Red meat cooked at very high temperatures produces carcinogenic substances. Eating white meat as opposed to red meat can therefore keep cancer at bay.
  9. Walk – Do you ever walk? Walking for thirty minutes every day is not only a very good exercise but also helps to keep many lifestyle diseases at bay, cancer included.
  10. Eat more fruits and vegetables – It’s not in vain that fibrous foods such as fruits and vegetables are added to every healthy adult. Fruits and vegetables contain antioxidants that are important in keeping us healthy.
  11. Add whole grain cereals to your diet – Healthy living demands that you stay away from processed foods as much as possible.
  12. Keep away from unnecessary food additives – Do you like those preservatives, those chemicals that add color to your meal? It’s time to rethink their appetizing ability. Most of these preservatives are carcinogenic and should be avoided.
